Our aim was to immerse the audience into the world of the play by introducing them into the environment created by the production. It was important to pay tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. and showcase the influence he had on society and highlight the impact that he instilled in the community for the years to come.
Throughout the production we played with the idea that thunder foreshadowed and led to the gunshot that killed MLK. Therefore we increased the volume of each thunder as the show progressed and ended it with a gunshot overlayed with thunder. This symbolized MLK’s feeling of running out of time
I chose clips of sermons and speeches where MLK spoke over varying topics and I thought it was important for our audience to hear some of the lesser known speeches. I took those clips and overlaid them with music which I felt sounded inspirational, but that did not take precedence from the words. I overlayed rain to help establish the world of the play that we were entering. My overall goal for the Pre-Show was to showcase how raw this production was going to be and I wanted the audience to soak in the music and words.
Throughout the production we played with the idea that thunder foreshadowed and led to the gunshot that killed MLK. Therefore we increased the volume of each thunder as the show progressed and ended it with a full gunshot overlayed with thunder. This symbolized MLK’s feeling of running out of time.
